Communities in Kokona District of Nasarawa State gets a facelift

The Kokona District of Nasarawa state is a budding district with communities like Angwan Malam, Songo, and Angwan Abeshi. These communities had some things in common, which was lack of clean water. Lifewater Nigeria in partnership with it’s sister organisation in Canada repaired motorised boreholes, constructed new boreholes. Now, the people have access to clean water. Before now, they spend hours trekking to get water from a dirty stream, which has exposed them to various water borne diseases.

This is a summary of our projects at Kokona District:

N22-R231 Angwan Mallam Masalachi

N22-R232 Angwan Mallam Mai Angwa

N22-R233 Angwan Mallam Makaranta

Angwan Malam is in Kokona district of Nasarawa State. The community has two motorised pumps and two broken hand pumps. Alternatively, residents depended on water from the river.

The submersible pump is also a bit far away from the residents and women have to carry an electric generator from the house on their heads. Carrying water from long distances is not just the issue here, they have to take turns to carry the electric generator back and forth as often as they water. How do they get the gas to power the generator? Of course it’s from little savings from sales of measures of harvested wheat that’s barely enough to feed the family.

We also rehabilitated two broken pumps with our intervention. The women were dancing and rejoicing over the rehabilitation efforts of Lifewater.

N22-R234 Songo Bakin Gari

N22-R235 Songo

Songo is in the Kokona district of Nasarawa State. Songo is a large community with considerable water shortage. The community were depending on a river and one hand pump. The river is polluted and located very far away. Women and girls spend hours trekking to collect water to meet their family’s needs. With significant hours devoted to the ‘’search for water’’, very little time is left for school, domestic duties or even economic activities that sustain the family.

Our intervention is meaningful as it opens the community to the chance to empower the women, improve their futures and bring their families and communities out of poverty. Today, there is clean water in Songo. The community also appreciates Lifewater Canada for the donation and significant help.

N22-R236 Angwan Abeshi

Abeshi is a community in the Kokona district of Nasarawa State. This community had its hope of clean water hanging for about three years before our intervention. A benevolent neighbour drilled a well for the community but left it uninstalled after his relationship with the community went sour.

For Abeshi village, there was clean water in a borehole in their midst but they had no way of drawing that water out. So they relied on open river water. This puts them at risk of great health hazards. There were also report of deaths from water-borne diseases.

Gratefully, through support from Lifewater Canada, we were able to mount a brand new Afridev pump. Relentlessly and for a long time, it will continue to draw them water from the well. This reminds us of the scriptures in Isaiah 12:3…with joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. We pray that the revelation of Jesus will be the experience of this community. The residents appreciate Lifewater Canada for making a difference.

N22-R246 Amba Makaranta

N22-R247 Amba Angwa Eggon

N22-R248 Amba Angwa Mada

Amba is a community in the Kokona district of Nasarawa State. The community were in dire need of clean water since the community’s three wells got broken several months ago. Before our intervention, the community depended on a river for water. The use of river water for cooking and cleaning is highly associated with the risk of typhoid fever and diarrhea in the community. Moreso, the insecurity in the North-central region of Nigeria makes a trek to the river to fetch water a terrifying one.

During the rehabilitation, the youths in the community were hospitable to us and full of gratitude for the donation. Today, Amba now has clean water to go around every household.
