N23-W052 Sullu Community

The Sullu I community has endured water scarcity for many years. The community fetches water from an unsafe stream exposing the people to waterborne diseases.   

Climate change has driven nomadic Fulani pastoralists of the Sahel further south, competing for land and water access with settled Sullu people. As a result, sporadic ethnic violence has erupted on a local scale, which has caused casualties. In addition, children and women are left vulnerable to the violence of the Fulani pastoralists, who would rather kill humans than risk losing their cattle to hunger and thirst.  

The consequence is the cattle polluting the community stream leading to infections and diseases in humans drinking the water.  

During our visit, we drilled a well for the community. Today, the community is free from unsafe water, violence, and diseases brought about by the changing weather patterns.
