Jikwoyi (N22-W256)

Jikwoyi is an urban slum on the outskirt of Abuja city. Jikwoyi is densely populated because most public servants in the city center are attracted to its low cost of housing. However, the water facilities in the community are grossly inadequate due to overpopulation.

Many residents who could not afford a borehole depend on water vendors for water as the government-managed water scheme is highly unreliable.

A man from the community, Mr. Noah, told us how young girls looking water are lured into a private residence only to get raped.

He said: “ here you see the good, the bad, and the ugly. Young girls are being assaulted and raped daily because of water.” Our intervention has restored the respect and dignity of the girl-child in Jikwoyi.
